Long nails have always been associated with monsters and witches. Huge claws and long, scratching nails are commonly used imagery in horror-movies to trigger the feeling of fear and unease in the audience. The longer the nails, the less human and more otherworldly a hand appears. The extension of nails is a small but strong change in our appearance. By elongating our fingers, we can change the frame of our body while the rest of it still remains the same. That’s why different artists use nails as a tool to extend the body. Nail-artists like Juan Alvear take a new approach on the traditional nail art. His nails consist of extensions with a sculpture-like feel, grotesque silhouettes and strange spirals. His and other artists’ Instagram photos represent a different take on the typical nail art accounts, that focus more on trends than experiments and actual art.
